Killing a cockroach, particularly by throwing it into a fire, was considered an omen of bad luck. During the 19th century in Maryland, there was a belief that if a cockroach flew onto you, it would herald illness or even death. Another sign of misfortune was spotting a roach crawling over the entrance of a room.
